Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator

The Body Mass Index is calculated from a person's weight and height and is used as a method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

What do the numbers mean?

For adults, the following table shows the standard weight categories associated with each BMI range.

  • Below 18.5
  • 18.5-24.9
  • 25.0-29.9
  • 30.0 and above
  • WEIGHT STATUS
  • Underweight
  • Normal
  • Overweight
  • Obese

Remember that BMI is only one way of assessing health risk. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines it is also important for you to take your waist circumference into consideration - your health risk increases if your waist is more than 88 cm/35 inches (women) or more than 102 cm/40 inches (men).

Are you a man over the age of 40?
Have you had heart disease or a stroke?
Answer "yes" if you have had angina, a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, a stroke, angioplasty, atherosclerosis or peripheral vascular disease.
Do you have diabetes?
Do you have a close relative (mother, father, sister or brother) with heart disease or high cholesterol?
Are you overweight?
Start by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) or measuring your waist circumference.

Answer "yes" if your BMI is greater than 25 or your waist measurement is more than 102 cm or 40 inches (male) or more than 88 cm or 35 inches (female).
Are you physically inactive?
Answer "yes" if you perform less than 20 minutes of vigorous exercise, 30 minutes of moderate exercise or 60 minutes of light exercise, 4 to 7 days of the week.
Do you smoke?
Do you drink excessively?
Answer "yes" if you drink more than 2 drinks per day (male) or 1 drink per day (female). A standard drink is: 341 ml or 12 oz. of beer; 142 ml or 5 oz. of wine; 43 ml or 1.5 oz. of liquor.
